1944 Esquire All-American Jazz Concert at the Metropolitan Opera House, broadcast on NBC Blue and also AFRS as part of " One Night Stand ." This was the first jazz concert at the Met and it probably wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been a War Bond Drive. (Admission was paid in War Bonds.) NY Times' article headline: " 3,600 BUY BONDS AT JAZZ SESSION; $650,000 Raised for War by Sale of Tickets to Concert of Esquire's Band. " It was also mentioned in The Billboard...

During WWII the government produced and distributed 78 RPM "Victory Discs," or V-Discs, to U.S. troops all over the world. The records were to be destroyed after the war but many of them survived. :) A lot of the V-Disc material was taken from radio programs like Command Performance; you can find out more in the book V-Discs: A History and Discography by Richard Sears. Any error or typo is mine. :) Since the gov't produced and distributed these records they are public domain but if...

News from 1944. I usually share these via torrent but I don't think all these files are available on archive.org so here's a 1944 news file dump. Plus some V-Discs. Any typo or error is mine....if you like my uploads / Demonoid torrents please consider donating to a veteran's charity of your choice, thank you. Especially if you intend to make $ or otherwise profit from these files. :D

Irish bagpipes solo, HMV IM525. Jackson was an 18th century piper/composer who gave his name to many fine tunes, most famously this one, which lends itself well to the pipes with room for cranning and staccato passages. Patsy Touhey recorded a typically intricate three part version on a wax cylinder, with one of his trademark flurries of notes in the third part. The Clare Jig is the title in John Roche's collection for the tune now called the Mug of Brown Ale. The next tune in Roche's book...

Irish bagpipes solo, HMV IM528. Byrne's is an ever popular tune, also recorded by Michael Coleman and the Ballinakill Ceili Band on 78. Kilfinane (Cill Fhíonáin in Irish) is a small market town in southeast County Limerick, and this hornpipe was contributed to Francis O'Neill's books by Tipperary fiddler Edward Cronin. Cronin composed tunes and this may be one of his originals. This is likely an example of Leo adapting tunes from books, although he may have learned it from a Munster musician...
